WANT TO BE PART OF THIS?

We are human beings
not human doings.

When all is well with our being, the doing is easy. Looking
after our physical and mental health is one of the simplest yet
most powerful ways to create a positive ripple effect. Not
just for ourselves, but for everyone around us. Wellbeing isn’t
just personal; it’s community-wide.

where it all started
The Wellbeing for Change Makers program began as a response to a deep and urgent need within the Coonamble community. In 2022, the region was rocked by a series of tragic suicides that left the community grieving and searching for support. Despite the severity of the situation, there was a noticeable gap in accessible mental health services—especially for small business owners, their teams, and families. Recognising this, the Coonamble Chamber of Commerce sought to develop a wellbeing initiative tailored to the realities of rural life and small-town dynamics. The goal was to create something practical, personal, and built around trust. A program that would break down barriers and make mental health support more accessible in a way that felt local and connected.
What we have done
In partnership with Employee Assistance Australia, the program officially launched in June 2024 and quickly became a lifeline for many in the region. Over the past 12 months, the program has delivered nearly 100 hours of face-to-face and telehealth counselling, along with 9 workshops covering topics such as stress, burnout, communication, bullying, and general wellbeing. Attendance at these sessions reached around 200 individuals. This is an incredible result that is more than double the average uptake of a typical Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The initiative also included local wellbeing days, community barbecues, and even a podcast series called Getting Real designed to normalise mental health conversations and reach people who may not engage with traditional services.
community impact
The impact on the community has been both visible and deeply felt. Businesses that engaged with the program saw their staff begin to access support services more openly, and some local leaders led by example by participating in sessions themselves. These small but powerful shifts began to create a ripple effect hopefully taking a step in the right direction towards changing the culture around mental health in the region. For many, the service filled a critical gap, offering the kind of consistent and caring support that simply didn’t exist before. The program created space for people to open up, to feel seen, and to feel safe in seeking help without stigma or judgment.
here we are now
Looking to the future, the Wellbeing for Change Makers program continues to grow through the launch of an online wellbeing portal designed to ensure continuity of care beyond face-to-face sessions. The portal offers resources, short courses, videos, podcasts, and self-assessments tailored to the needs of rural businesses and individuals. With plans to return for more wellbeing workshops and community events, the Chamber of Commerce and Employee Assistance Australia remain committed to supporting the emotional and mental health of the region. This program has proven what’s possible when a community comes together to prioritise wellbeing, and Coonamble is only just getting started.
